Spring Cleanup 2024 Report

On Saturday, May 18, the Shark River Cleanup Coalition partnered with Neptune Township, Neptune City, and Monmouth County Clean Communities in a shoreline cleanup of the Shark River. The event was co-hosted by the Neptune City Residents and Homeowner’s Association.

A total of 53 SRCC volunteers, including members of the Neptune football team and Neptune Brownie Troop 503, collected close to ¾ of a ton of debris including 42 bags of trash, 6 bags of recyclables (300+ bottles and cans), plastic storage containers, pressure treated wood, and assorted metal. 400+ candy and snack wrappers were collected, with some volunteers recording too many to count. Debris included countless pieces of small plastics, foam, glass, cigarette butts, and bottle caps. Other items collected by volunteers included fishing supplies, airplane liquor bottles, balls, a lawn chair and shed door, chains, wire, and other metal items. Of significance was the reduction in collection of plastic bags from previous years.

The SRCC holds bi-annual shoreline cleanups of the Shark River, with help from its members, students, families, corporate employees, scouts, clean communities’ staff from Neptune, Neptune City, and Monmouth County, and other environmental volunteers.

On June 22, SRCC will partner with Paddle Time Kayaks, a mobile kayak rental company from Shark River Hills, and Eco Paddle for the Planet, based in Ocean Grove, in a kayak cleanup of the Shark River. Check www.sharkriver.org or our Facebook page for more information in June.
